Dine With Me

A fundraising virtual dinner in Aid of Polio Eradication

On Polio Day 2024 we are hosting a virtual fundraising dinner to raise money for End Polio Now

For the virtual dinner we present a virtual menu. Once we receive your registration we will send you the recipes to go with the menu. You can also find them in your copy of the collection.

If you have not yet registered please do so, we need to know how many are attending to arrange small chat rooms to facilitate you meeting fellow Rotarians.

The meeting will open at 7.00pm London time (BST). The time in your zone will be shown to you by zoom when you receive the meeting link after registration.

At 7.35 pm we will come into a larger group to hear from Dr Sylvia Whitlock, whom we are privileged to have as our key speaker. We expect the dinner to finish at 8.45 pm but people may wish to linger.

Like any fundraising dinner there will be good company and a great speaker, Dr Sylvia Whitlock.

It was 1976 when School Superintendent and Duarte Rotary President Richard Key invited three educators to be members of the Duarte Club (located in California) to increase its numbers.  Later in 1976, Dr. Sylvia Whitlock, then an elementary school principal replaced one of the first three women. All were listed by first initial only to mask their gender on RI and District records.

This rogue decision started a long organizational and legal battle to change Rotary Bylaws to include women.  When Rotary International leadership became aware of the club’s admission of women, the Club was given a choice: to terminate the women’s membership or to lose the club charter.  The Club voted to maintain the women’s membership, became the X-Rotary Club of Duarte, and remained so through the US Supreme Court Decision in 1987. Sylvia continued to serve in the X-Rotary Club of Duarte, and was Club President in 1986-87 when the United States Supreme Court decided that Rotary International must allow women to be members of the organization.  This made her the first female president of a Rotary club in the world. While Sylvia insists that she was simply in the right position at the right time, she has been a superb representative of Rotary and Rotary women.  Over the past 47 years, she has served the mission of Rotary (the last 20 in Claremont California Rotary).  She was the District 5300 Governor in 2012-13, and has continuously encouraged women, including her friend PRIP Jennifer Jones (2022-23), to follow in her footsteps. Following her address Sylvia will answer questions before we have a chance for more Fellowship in the larger group.
